STANTON WARRIORS!!!! 27th November Brown Alley 0

Against The Grain w/ Stanton Warriors (UK) & Skool Of Thought (UK) Nov 27 Brown Alley

Proudly presented by: Darkbeat, Rock Like This, and Mixed Messages.

Photobucket

STANTON WARRIORS:

One way or another you’ve probably already come into contact with the Stanton Warriors. For some time it’s most likely it was underfoot as the market leader in drain covers. In recent years though, it’s more likely to be from one of the most popular and distinctive dance DJ, production and remix outfits about, Mark Yardley & Dominic B – the Stanton Warriors.

True pioneers of a sound that broke all the rules, Stanton Warriors took breaks and twisted it beyond all recognition, dropping speaker shattering bass lines and massive beats…all to devastating effect. Producing and remixing the likes of Big Daddy Kane, Fat Boy Slim, Basement Jaxx and Missy Eliott, plus releasing classic albums such as the Stanton Sessions and FabricLive 30, it’s easy to see why they are regarded as the number 1 heavyweights of breaks.

SKOOL OF THOUGHT

Living between the UK and Australia, Skool Of Thought is the owner and label manager behind the award winning Against The Grain & SuperCharged Music record labels – home to the likes of the Freestylers, Krafty Kuts, Splitloop, Ed Solo and of course Skool Of Thought. He is the guy responsible for the enormous Groove Armada ‘Superstylin’ and Freestylers v Pendulum ‘Painkiller’ breaks remixes. He has appeared on the front cover of 3D magazine in Australia, described by IDJ magazine as ‘an underrated genius’ and recognized by DJ magazine as helping form the ‘nu skool breaks’ scene. He has produced countless breakbeat monsters over the years including Heavyweight Breaks Volumes 1 & 3, Breakspoll 3, numerous 12″ singles and is currently celebrating the success of his debut artist album with Ed Solo entitled ‘Random Acts Of Kindness’. To top it all off he has just launched a third label called ‘Cool & Deadly’ with Tayo. Phew! Time to take a lesson from Skool…

ADSORB [Against The Grain, UK]

ADSORB (Adam Dowding) is a DJ/Producer from the UK and is the resident DJ for Supercharged with Krafty Kuts, Skool Of Thought & Sneaky.

His music style is a blend of Breakbeat and Electro House, he has played at numerous clubs/festivals Worldwide including: Matter & Fabric (UK) Retro (Lisbon) Club Culture (Bangkok) Glastonbury (Radio 1 opening party) Royfest (Phuket).

This year started off with Adsorb being nominated for ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’ at Breakspoll 2009, he opened up the main room at Matter for the launch of Krafty Kuts’s ‘Evening with Krafty Kuts’ playing alongside Format, Cash Money and Pendulum. He was featured in the August edition of DJ magazine as one of the hottest DJ’s to look out for that month and he played at Annie Nightingale’s Radio 1 opening party at Glastonbury Festival, smashed a peak time slot at the Glade festival in the Nuskool Breaks tent and finished the summer festival circuit off at Royfest in Phuket in Thailand where he headlined the sat night on a beach performing to 20’000 people.

His gigs are going from strength to strength, he has several new remixes and original tunes in the pipe-line, big plans for the future and is now getting recognised as one of the UK’s hottest new DJ’s/artists to be watching out for this year.

LEE COOMBS

Bending boundaries and ignoring the status quo – where would the Breakbeat scene be today without Lee Coombs. For over a decade this British producer has been at the forefront of it all; releasing groundbreaking mix CDs, remixing the world’s most acclaimed artists and knocking out dancefloor destroying productions that are considered classics years after their release.

A seasoned veteran, Coombs first hit the DJ slopes in 1989, bathing himself in the acid house scene at parties around London and Cambridge. Crucial in shaping his all-encompassing approach to DJing and production, this boundary-less approach would become Coombs’ trademark, mixing up breaks, house, electro, techno and acid with dexterous assurance.

In 1998 Coombs made his first massive strike on the breaks scene as the prized recruit of then ‘up and coming’ label Finger Lickin’, with the man’s acclaimed album of 2001 ‘Future Sound of Retro’ signalling his arrival on the world stage. Such was the impressive nature of Coombs’ debut that respected industry figurehead Pete Tong noted him as the ‘man to watch’. An ‘Essential New Tune’ accolade soon followed courtesy of Tong, with Coombs’ re-rub of Quivver’s ‘One Last Time’ making dance fans weak at the knees the world over.

Such was the demand for Coombs, that luminary Paul Oakenfold was soon knocking at his door, resulting in the critically acclaimed Perfecto Breaks album of 2002. After landing the job of remixing Oakenfold’s ‘Time of your Life’ and then further re-rubs for world class acts such as Moby, New Order, Lamb and Planet Funk, Coombs’ status as one of the industry’s most in-demand artists quickly developed. Even the BBC was under the Coombs spell with them flying him over to Prague in the summer of 2003 to record the theme music for the television program ‘Born to Win’ with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.

Ever the musical innovator, Lee Coombs’ 2004 album release ‘Breakfast of Champions’ signalled a significant evolution in his sound. Collaborating with some of the most respected artists in his field – from Dylan Rhymes to Christian J, Andy Gardner (Plump DJs) and Jem Panufnik (Soul of Man), the album charted the ambitious new territory of Tech Funk, injecting the Breaks sound with butt-shaking elements of House, Electro and Techno. It was a style Coombs would make his own, alongside fellow innovators Meat Katie, Elite Force and Dylan Rhymes. Featured on the acclaimed album was the cracking single ‘Shiver’ (feat. Katherine Ellis) which was snapped up by classic house imprint Azuli and became one of the biggest vocal house anthems of 2005, whilst the ‘Alright All-Night/Dubhead’ and ‘Obsessional Rhythm’ singles went straight to no.1 in the DJ Mag Beats & Breaks Chart.

Departing Finger Lickin’ for new pastures in 2005, Coombs’ focus shifted to releasing music through his own Thrust Recordings imprint as well as Adrift and Meat Katie’s Lot49 (then Whole9Yards). It was at this time that he started his Thrust club nights in San Francisco, with the quarterly events becoming one of the hottest tickets on the West Coast.

Change has further characterised Coombs in recent times. Not only has the recently married Brit relocated to the USA to settle with his new wife, but he also formally joined the Lot49 team and is set to mix the label’s latest compilation due out in February 2008.

If that’s not enough, a groundbreaking new artist album is also on the way. While still dancefloor focused, Coombs views this as his most ambitious project yet with a range of tempo from 100 – 128 bpm and collaborations with the likes of Longrange (Phil Hartnoll from Orbital’s new band), Meat Katie, Seasunz, Katherine Ellis and many others.

When he is not in the producers chair, Coombs regularly tours all corners of the globe and is a bona-fide fans favourite throughout Europe, the USA, Australia, Asia and of course the UK. His popularity has also ensured his repeat appearance at infamous festival ‘The Burning Man’ in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada.

In an industry that’s so often governed by trends and fads, Coombs’ unwavering ability to simultaneously destroy dancefloors and push musical boundaries almost 20 years since he first touched a pair of turntables is a remarkable achievement in itself. With plans to further spread his production wings to writing music for film and TV, as well as producing bands, there’s little doubt that his impressive sonic skills will be rocking ears for many years to come.

MYAGI

Canada’s Myagi has had a huge few years – over the course of his career he has been one of the more well noted globetrotters of the house / breakbeat scene, but the last while has been….well…..crazy!

2008 and 2009 have seen Myagi launch Pop And Lock – a personal label for original material and select output from friends and co-conspirators that have seen support from the likes of Pete Tong, The Japanese Popstars, Utah Saints, The Scumfrog, The Crystal Method, Meat Katie, and the list goes on…..

In the same timeframe, Myagi remixed Orbital, The Crystal Method, The Dub Pistols, and did his second remix for Thievery Corporation’s ESL Records. His original material has hit number one on sales charts for Beatport and various other retailers, and his mashups and mix sets have pleased thousands of internet music freaks the world over.

His debut album “3 Years Of Sunrise,” released in 2008 was dubbed “an uplifting electronic masterpiece” by DJ Mag, earning a 4.5/5, and has been compared to the classic works of acts like Leftfield, BT, or even the Chemical Brothers. (AWESOME Album)

His yearly tours of Australia, China, Canada, the US, the EU and various other countries have allowed Myagi to drop his unique blend of hard edged funk, electro, breaks, house (everything but the kitchen sink really) on what can only now be referred very expectant crowds. A firm favorite in many of the worlds top party cities, the Myagi sound has been a fixture of the international club scene for 5 years or so, and has garnered a huge following, especially amongst the fans of the “classic” era of dance music – a key part of the crowd especially considering the degree to which Myagi releases are used as key set highlights by the biggest names in the history of the genre.

ROCK LIKE THIS @ High Vibes festival – Sunday 20th September, 2009 0

This High Vibes The “Rock Like This” DJ crew joins forces with Peacock Hotel to bring you one hell of a HIG VIBE!!!
Playing over three stages over the entire day Peacock and Rock Like This are proud to present Local Legend…
PARIS WELLS + BAND LIVE. (Support by Mourning Sons, Monkey and Smile on Impact).

————————–PARIS WELS—————————–
Every now and again an artist like Melbourne’s own Paris Wells comes along seemingly just to make life hard for people who have to pigeon-hole things for a living. Even MySpace’s three category fool-proof plan misses the mark by about ten categories on this one. We’re talking about a girl whose influences range from NWA to Led Zeppelin; who built up an incredible street-level buzz throughout Melbourne’s underground circuit and then took a break to jet off around the country to support Justin Timberlake; who has the style and grace of Audrey Hepburn with the attitude of Keith Richards. This girl is Oxford and Webster’s worst nightmare, but she’s going to become your eardrum’s best friend.
In late ’07, Paris swung the spotlight onto herself through the release of her debut EP, Mum Hasn’t Slept Yet, and suddenly St. Jerome’s favourite resident became a household name amongst the in-crowd at bars across the country. Off the back of this notoriety, Paris hit the road and mesmerised crowds at Meredith Music Festival, Big Day Out, Falls Festival and Sydney Festival with a voice that could turn gay men straight and straight men insane.
“Keep It’s” suggestive and infectious first single, Dat Du Dat, has taken radio hostage over the past couple of months and, in true Paris Wells’ style, has crossed boundaries from ultra-hip community stations to the country’s largest commercial networks. The album, produced by True Live’s RHyNo, is destined for the same fate – accessible, catchy songs infused with a jaded swagger that will kick you in the throat and make you love it.
And now she joins forces with the Peacock Hotel and the High Vibes festival to bring in the good vibes in style.

————————MOURNING SONS————————-
The mourning sons are a four-piece indie rock/grunge band based in Melbourne. the mourning sons began working with producer Dean Dirt (Magic Dirt, The Red Sun Band, Violent Soho) in late 2008 and are now putting the finishing touches on their self-funded debut album ‘pipedreams’. Engineered by Brent Punshon (The Nation Blue, Legends Of Motorsport) at Head Gap Studios in Melbourne, ‘pipedreams’ is an album with a large emphasis on live performances and spontaneity.

The mourning sons – ‘pipedreams’ is set to be independently released mid 2009. In the meantime the mourning sons will continue to perform their original brand of foot stomping rock n roll at various live venues in and around Melbourne.

———————-ROCK LIKE THIS—————————–

Then outside on Bastings St. its the “ROCK LIKE THIS” DJ tent. The “Rock Like This” Crew have been running events for 4 years now touring the best in the world of Break beats, and Dubstep. And this year the crew joins forces with Peacock Hotel and High Vibes to bring you a stage of pure party music made for your dancing shoes. Featuring Brainstorm, Deviant, Citizen.com Vs Matty Blades, Andy Hoffman, Flip and Llupa.

————————BEER GARDEN—————————–
And finally why not hit the Peacock Beer garden between 2pm – 6pm. Peacocks Beer Garden is disputably the best one the North side of town. Providing ample seating, and outside bars there is nowhere else to spend the Summer.

And for this High Vibes Peacock brings you Grooves in the Beer Garden with DJ Shu and Snowie!! Playing a funked up mash of hip-hop, old school party beats, with a dash of rock and Roll!!

Elite force…

Simon Shackleton’s Elite Force project began way back in 1996, debuting on his own newly founded Fused and Bruised label with a series of peerless 12s and remixes. After a successful five years,he put Fused and Bruised on the backburner to concentrate on production work, and following several years with Whole9Yards and Moonshine he became a mainstay recording artist for Adrift Recordings (formally known as Kingsize Records) before moving on to set up his own Used & Abused imprint.

Often credited for being a lynchpin in the developing the tech-funk genre (an amalgamation of breaks, house, techno and electro) he has released a series of highly successful singles in the past few years, finding broad support from DJs and musicians across the board, including the likes of James Zabiela, the Plump DJs, Laurent Garnier and Damian Lazarus. In addition to these solo singles, Meat Katie has been a regular collaborator with Elite Force, a relationship that had begun in 2003 with the massive-selling ‘Toba’. As a remixer, Elite Force has always been in considerable demand, with re-workings for the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Crystal Method, Jungle Brothers, Stereo MCs, UNKLE, Infusion, Rennie Pilgrem, Shiloh and Dylan Rhymes all contributing to his reputation as one of the most creative and effective remixers around.

Elite Force’s music has also been the soundtrack to many a movie, with a huge list of impressive A-list credits to his name, including the likes of the Matrix, Charlie’s Angels, Arlington Road, Mortal Kombat, Crow, The Bone Collector, The Jackyll, Spiderman 2 and his music has appeared on a wide array of TV shows, from CSI to Top Gear, from Football Focus to LA Doctors. He’s also soundtracked a number of computer games, including no fewer than 5 FIFA games, several of the Wipeout series, The Matrix, and Motorstorm 1, and he is currently writing some bespoke music for the sequel to one of the biggest games of all time……

On the decks, Elite Force has been a prime mover since 1990 when he cut his teeth playing huge student nights and self-promoted acid house nights in the South West of England, before moving up to London and ultimately gravitating towards his tech-funk style, with which he now has a full diary of global bookings and has become known as one of the top technicians on a circuit that has included massive shows in Hungary, Australia, Italy, USA, Czech Republic, India, Turkey, Spain, Japan and China, as well as numerous festival slots including Glastonbury, Coachella and the Glade. His bi-weekly strongarm sessions webcasts have become something of an intraweb institution since their inception back in 2001, and the most recent archives should be your first stop if you’ve not come across the Force in action before
