Hi. My name is sadtraxx.

Don’t let the name fool you, I’d love to carve out a little niche for myself as the first emo DJ, but it’s just a nickname one of my mates gave me when he found out that I was getting into DJing, and it kinda stuck.

I’m a self-taught DJ, and a bit of a nerd.. I’m loving all the new technology coming out. I’ve started getting into Djing with Ableton, but my Pioneer CDJ’s and DJM-800 are my main love right now. My ears have got a nice habit of stumbling onto cutting edge sounds and I really think that dance music just keeps getting tidier & stronger. There is so much top notch music out there that it makes my job really easy! I’m an energetic person who likes to put on a show, and I probably dance just as hard behind the decks as you guys on the dancefloor.

I mix a chunky salsa of Tech-House/Techno/Progressive with elements of Electro & Breaks, and cut up my mixes with any effect I can.

I’ve met some top people and landed some pretty sweet gigs over the last couple of years, playing at Lounge, My Aeon, Miss Libertine’s, Killing Time and Eurotrash to name a few. I’m now greatly honoured to be a part of the Rock Like This family, and look forward to representing them with all the energy my hyperactive heart can muster!

Anyway, enough about me, let’s talk about YOU..

You want me to come dance for me, yeah?

Abstar’s love for broken beats began as a hobby collecting her favourite tunes on record and heading out to Melbourne’s prime break beat parties. After countless hours of rocking it out on the decks in her bedroom, Abstar then ventured out and tried her hand at Rock Like This’ open deck nights at Alia Bar. Not long after, her labour of love soon evolved into playing her first paid gig “Future Sounds” hosted by Rock Like This in 2008.

From bedroom to dance floor, Abstar soon became one of Melbourne’s Lady DJ Selectors. Fined tuned on the Subbass decks, she is now recognised for her phat ass booty breaks among the crowd. Abstar has supported the likes of, Stanton Warriors, Deekline & Wizard, Skool of Thought, Splitloop, Aquasky, Freestylers, Spoonbill, Vent, Ill Gates, Napt & Hyper to name a few. She also holds a residency with Melbourne’s Rock Like This, Subbass & Dropping Phat crews, playing her blend of booty breaks.

Abstar’s belief that music feeds the soul is evident every time she hits the decks. If she turns just one persons night in the right direction with a single track or brings down the house with a sold out gig, she’ll be one happy lady.

Questions and Answers with Abstar

What has been the highlight of your DJ career so far?
My most memorable moment/ career highlight would have to be playing at Stanton Warriors last year; this was a sell out show at Brown Alley. The vibe was amazing, and playing out in the garden bar to crowd that was absolutely going off! And not to mention being alongside my most favourite and adored DJs Stanton Warriors!!

What do you love about music?
Overall what I love about the music is how you can connect with people and creates a vibe, work the dance floor and get people going nuts and make then dance. You can really feel like you have accomplished something and achieved something.

Music can really motivate people and bring them together it’s an energy thing. I love music because it makes me feel good, when I’m having a bad day I put on my favourite booty track and I feel better pretty much straight away.

I love the music scene in Melbourne it has so much diversity there is always great gigs to go and see.

I really thank the Rocklike this crew as they gave me my first gig which, I actually started doing open deck nights that is how I got my first gig. Subbass has been a great opportunity also, as I played lots of gigs there and really got out my booty sound which then eventuated to me playing at all the Brown alley gigs and landing a residency at Dropping Phat!

Mix together phat basslines, crunchy rhythms, deep grooves, bouncy glitchy beats and you have a taste of the Yenks sound.

Born and bred in Melbourne, Yenks has been exposed to a wide range of musical styles. In doing so he has developed and refined his unique sound and although it is grounded with midtempo glitch hop, breakbeat and dubstep it’s never limited to the constraints of just one genre.

Yenks has been DJing across Melbourne for over 8 years and has supported countless big names. Recently his love for music and Ableton has seen him focus on his own productions and remixes. With a few releases signed this year expect big things in the future and to have a bass face or two when seeing him perform live.

Shifty began his DJ career by winning a DJ comp at Out of Order, one of Melbourne’s longest running and most successful Breaks nights which at the time was headed up by Nick Thayer. Things just kept getting bigger and better for Shifty, becoming the opening DJ for Melbourne’s highly respected hard Breaks party Gimme A Break. It was from playing the opening sets, Shifty honed his style of tough slamming Breakbeat that had just enough funk injected to keep the dancefloor moving without making their heads cave. Shifty now holds a residency at Melbourne’s only weekly Breaks night, Bass Camp and can be found supporting most of the international Breaks artists that come through Melbourne with the Rock Like This crew. Shifty has played support for the likes of Stanton Warriors, The Freestylers, Krafty Kuts, Far Too Loud, Rennie Pilgrim, Elite Force, NAPT, Ctrl Z, Dub Pistols, Splitloop, Deekline, and Skool of Thought to name a few. Shifty prefers to be known as a BASSLINE DJ which allows his sets to be a mash of Breaks, Electro and Dubstep. Shifty prefers his sounds on the harder darker edge but is just as comfortable scratching and looping out a chilled downbeat jazzy cafe set if that’s what’s required. Shifty takes pride in having a record collection vast enough to walk into any club at anytime and play an appropriate set but will be at his best at 4am smashing it so hard your nose will bleed…… 2011 is the year Shifty is moved into the world of production so keep your ears peeled for some hard heavy snarling bass action from Mel Towns heavyweight bass hitter Shifty Sly.

Originating from Perth, Western Australia, DiiSTORTiiON discovered breakbeat in his early clubbing days and never looked back.

Seeing acts like Soul of Man, Krafty Kuts, Aquasky and Adam Freeland, rock Perth’s most renowned underground club – Ambar, completely converted him over to electronic music and his alter ego DiiSTORTiiON was born.

Quickly gaining sets at clubs all over Perth, DiiSTORTiiON got well known for his sound being more of the harder edged style of breaks while still having a party vibe blended throughout. Playing out more and more eventually caught the eye of Perth’s Elite Dj’s “Japan 4”, otherwise known as Ambar’s residents and he was invited to join their ranks.

Stepping outside the clubs DiiSTORTiiON kept busy by doing plenty of local radio support slots and a five year long weekly radio show called ‘Broken Frequency’. Starting out on local Australian radio Kranky Digital, DiiSTORTiiON eventually moved over to the number one online breakbeat radio station in the world NSB Radio, where he hosted a weekly 2 hour radio show showcasing the newest breakbeat tracks to a worldwide audience.

Spreading outside of Perth DiiSTORTiiON toured regularly on the east coast of Australia supporting such acts as Elite Force, Chase & Status and Rouge Element while they were on tour. Gigs on the east coast got so regular he eventually decided to pick up everything and move over to Melbourne to continue his Dj career from there.

2010 has been a busy year for DiiSTORTiiON. His hard work in the studio has eventually paid off with three of his original tracks being signed to USA breakbeat label Ridiculoud Records and his online mixes, bootlegs and original material reaching over 14000 downloads worldwide. His first Ep ‘Dynamite’ was a massive success with it receiving a 3.5 out of 5 star rating by Dj Mag and receiving support from Far Too Loud, Karton, Kickflip and many others. Mr No Hands, breaks reviewer from Mix Mag in the Uk described him as “a breaks act to keep an eye on globally.”

On the djing front he has picked up multiple residences with the Mixed Messages crew, Skool of Thoughts ‘Against the Grain’ parties, Brown Alleys resident Saturdays ‘Under Suspicion’, Melbourne’s premium weekly breaks night ‘Bass Camp’ at Lounge and guests spots all over town. Support slots have also stepped up with DiiSTORTiiON being fortunate enough to share the stage with some of the biggest names in the business including Stanton Warriors, Elite Force, Ctrl Z, Napt, General Midi, Freestylers plus many more.

Moving forward to 2011 and this year is strongly leaning towards production. In the first few months of the year DiiSTORTiiON had 3 of his original tracks signed and released on Ridiculoud Records, V.I.M records and Definition – Breaks Records. Also remix work is coming in as well with remixes for best New label at Breakspoll 2011 – Scarcity Records,V.I.M records, Definition Breaks and Canadian label Breakz R Boss.

That’s a massive 5 releases in the first few months of the year with more still to come.!!

Expect more original material and remixes coming out of DiiSTORTiiON’s corner this year as he works hard to really cut out a individual sound in his productions and his dj sets.

Moving into promotions he is heavily involved in running the Mixed messages parties at Brown Alley with mate Muska and all the mixed messages crew. The parties cover a range of electronic styles and regularly put on festival style line ups. Check out their website at www.mixedmessages.com.au

Supporting all things breaks as well DiiSTORTiiON is a resident dj for the premier breakbeat promotion team in Melbourne – Rock Like This.

So what to expect from a live set? Loving the way Djing is moving forward DiiSTORTiiON embraces the genre mashing styles of dj’s these days and pushes all sounds he loves into a dj set. Be that breakbeat, dnb, dub step hip hop or electro he will mold it into a dj set and blended with a heap of his own edits, bootlegs and original tracks to express himself musically through his djing. If you like big basslines, phat drums and big synths then come check it out!!
