Abstar

Abstar’s love for broken beats began as a hobby collecting her favourite tunes on record and heading out to Melbourne’s prime break beat parties. After countless hours of rocking it out on the decks in her bedroom, Abstar then ventured out and tried her hand at Rock Like This’ open deck nights at Alia Bar. Not long after, her labour of love soon evolved into playing her first paid gig “Future Sounds” hosted by Rock Like This in 2008.
From bedroom to dance floor, Abstar soon became one of Melbourne’s Lady DJ Selectors. Fined tuned on the Subbass decks, she is now recognised for her phat ass booty breaks among the crowd. Abstar has supported the likes of, Stanton Warriors, Deekline & Wizard, Skool of Thought, Splitloop, Aquasky, Freestylers, Spoonbill, Vent, Ill Gates, Napt & Hyper to name a few. She also holds a residency with Melbourne’s Rock Like This, Subbass & Dropping Phat crews, playing her blend of booty breaks.
Abstar’s belief that music feeds the soul is evident every time she hits the decks. If she turns just one persons night in the right direction with a single track or brings down the house with a sold out gig, she’ll be one happy lady.
Questions and Answers with Abstar
What has been the highlight of your DJ career so far?
My most memorable moment/ career highlight would have to be playing at Stanton Warriors last year; this was a sell out show at Brown Alley. The vibe was amazing, and playing out in the garden bar to crowd that was absolutely going off! And not to mention being alongside my most favourite and adored DJs Stanton Warriors!!
What do you love about music?
Overall what I love about the music is how you can connect with people and creates a vibe, work the dance floor and get people going nuts and make then dance. You can really feel like you have accomplished something and achieved something.
Music can really motivate people and bring them together it’s an energy thing. I love music because it makes me feel good, when I’m having a bad day I put on my favourite booty track and I feel better pretty much straight away.
I love the music scene in Melbourne it has so much diversity there is always great gigs to go and see.
I really thank the Rocklike this crew as they gave me my first gig which, I actually started doing open deck nights that is how I got my first gig. Subbass has been a great opportunity also, as I played lots of gigs there and really got out my booty sound which then eventuated to me playing at all the Brown alley gigs and landing a residency at Dropping Phat!
